An adaptor for non-British plugs if you wish to use a hair-dryer or other electrical appliances. In the UK we use three-pin plugs and the power is 240 volts. You can buy such adaptors in London if you have difficulty finding them in your country.
Consider bringing a laptop – especially if your course will require you to give presentations, etc. We have a wireless network in the college, and of course you are also welcome to use the college computers during college opening hours.
An internationally recognised student card if you have one.
A good bi-lingual dictionary. Mono-lingual dictionaries can be bought in London if you do not already have one.
A memory stick to save any work you do in the college.
Any materials you might wish to use for self-study, (for instance, a technical text or book on a specific subject that interests you) or for a presentation on your course, (for instance, statistics, graphs or a map).
Suitable clothing and equipment if you wish to do some sport (and perhaps an umbrella!).
Four passport-sized photographs, for student card and travel passes etc.
Unpredictable weather in London
London does not usually have very hot or very cold weather but it can change quickly and unpredictably. The maximum temperature in summer is usually about 30ºC and in winter the lowest is probably around 0º. It does not snow much in London. We often have mild winters and cool summers so you should be prepared for anything. An umbrella is always useful although it doesn’t rain as much as people think.
What to wear in London
We do not expect any particular dress code in the college. Most of our students tend not to dress formally.
When you go sightseeing or shopping in London, you will want to be comfortable and warm. Most pubs, restaurants and theatres do not have an official dress code and you will be welcome in your casual clothes. Some more prestigious bars and restaurants, and particularly nightclubs, have a smarter dress code. The most common requirement is ‘no trainers’ (no sports shoes). It is better to carry your coat with you if you know that you will be out till late as it can be very cold waiting for a taxi or bus late at night.
Make sure you bring some warm clothes as in Britain it may be quite cold in the evenings even during summer period.
There are many very nice places to walk in London so bring some good shoes as well.
